Creating a 3D Pipeline System Diagram in Revit: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Create a 3D Pipeline System Diagram in REVIT

During the design process, it is often helpful to use system diagrams or schematics to illustrate the principles behind various piping systems throughout a building. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to create a 3D system diagram in REVIT.

1. Start by creating a 3D view. Navigate to the Manage tab and select 3D View. Click on Default 3D View to generate a default 3D perspective.

2. Adjust the detail level of the 3D view by selecting Detail Level in the View Control Bar. Set it to Coarse. This simplifies the display, showing all pipelines as single-line representations.

3. In the View Control Bar, click on Unlock 3D View. Then choose Save Orientation and Lock View. If the 3D view is still named 3D by default, rename it to indicate that it is a locked view. Enter the new name in the dialog box as shown below.

4. Open the Visibility/Graphic Overrides dialog box. Under the Model Categories tab, turn off the visibility of all categories except for pipes, fittings, pipe accessories, and mechanical equipment as needed. This will display only the pipeline systems and corresponding equipment, as illustrated in the image.

5. To differentiate between system types, create and apply filters that display only the relevant systems in the current view. For example, when drawing a water supply and drainage system diagram, create filters that hide other system pipelines such as sprinkler systems and HVAC water systems.

6. Create additional filters to hide elements like machines and devices that do not belong to the current system. Since various user devices may be included under the equipment category, use the Filter or Hide in View tools to conceal unnecessary elements. If needed, shared parameters can be added to equipment to identify the system they belong to, allowing filters to control their visibility accurately.

7. Use the Tag command to annotate key information such as pipe diameter and elevation. If necessary, add notes using the Text tool. Once complete, export the annotated drawing to finalize the system diagram, as shown in the figure.

Summary: By following the steps above, you can effectively create 3D system diagrams in REVIT that isolate specific piping systems using filters. Adding appropriate annotations ensures clear communication and practical application of the design.
