BIM Software Tip: Adjusting Exposure Settings in Navisworks
Exposure controls how real-world brightness values are translated into images. You can adjust exposure settings either before or after rendering. If you know the desired exposure settings, it’s best to set them prior to rendering the image.
When you change exposure settings in the Environment tab, the effect will immediately appear in the Scene View window. These settings are saved with your model, so the same exposure will be applied the next time you open the file.
Note that daylight and sky effects are only visible when exposure is enabled. Otherwise, the Scene View background will appear white.
How to toggle exposure on or off:
- Click the Rendering tab, then go to the System panel and select Autodesk Rendering.
- In the Autodesk Rendering window toolbar, click Exposure. You can also toggle exposure on and off in the Environment tab.
Steps to fully adjust exposure:
- Click the Rendering tab, then select the System panel and click Autodesk Rendering.
- Switch to the Environment tab and open the Exposure panel.
- Use the Exposure Value slider to control the overall brightness of the rendered image. This setting is similar to exposure compensation on cameras with automatic exposure. Values range from -6 (brighter) to 16 (darker), with a default of 6.
- Use the Highlight slider to adjust the brightness of the image’s brightest areas. Set values between 0 (darker highlights) and 1 (brighter highlights), defaulting to 0.25.
- Adjust the Mid Tone Color Scheme slider to control the brightness between highlights and shadows. The range is 0.1 (darker midtones) to 4 (brighter midtones), with a default of 1.
- Use the Shadow slider to modify the brightness of the darkest parts of the image. Values range from 0.1 (brighter shadows) to 4 (darker shadows), default set at 0.2.
- The White Point slider controls the color temperature of light sources that should appear white in the rendered image. This is similar to the white balance setting on digital cameras. The default is 6500. If the image looks too orange, lower the White Point value. If it appears too dark blue, increase the value.
- Use the Saturation slider to adjust color intensity. Values range from 0 (grayscale) to 5 (vivid colors), with the default set to 1.
Be sure to check the Open box to enable exposure. This effect will be visible in both realistic visual styles and photo-realistic visual styles.
