Revit 2019 New Features: Explanation of the Offset Function
The offset function allows you to create, copy, or move selected elements—such as walls or beams—by a specified distance parallel to their original position. This feature can be applied to a single element or a series of elements belonging to the same family. You can set the offset distance either by clicking to place the element or by entering a numerical value.
Note that the behavior of the offset parameter found in the properties panel differs from that in the ribbon or options bar. To learn more about these parameters, search for specific terms like “Bottom offset”.
To use the offset function for moving or copying elements:
- Go to the Modify tab.
- Within the Modify panel, click on Offset.
Here are some key options when working with offsets:
- Create: When drawing graphic elements, use the Options Bar to specify the offset parameter.
- Offset: Define the distance by which the element should be offset.
- Chain: Create a series of offset elements in sequence.
- Positioning Line: Specify the reference line from which to offset the element.
Keep the following guidelines in mind when using offsets:
- Offsets can only be applied along the line, beam, or the supporting work plane. For example, if a model is drawn with its work plane set to Floor Plan: Elevation 1, only lines in that plane can be offset within this plan view.
- Walls created as built-in families cannot be offset.
- You cannot offset an element in a view that is perpendicular to its work plane; for instance, walls cannot be offset in elevation views.
