How to Remove CAD Registry Entries Safely

How to Delete CAD Registry Information

If you open CAD and encounter issues such as the error message “problem loading acad.dll resource file”, which causes the software to crash or prevents it from opening, you may need to delete certain registry entries to resolve the problem.

Step 1:

Click StartRun, then type regedit (or press Windows key + R) to open the Registry Editor.

Navigate to the following registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREAutodeskAutoCADR18.0

Right-click the R18.0 key and select Delete to remove it completely.

Note: If you have multiple CAD versions installed, do NOT delete keys for versions R16.0 (CAD 2004), R17.0 (CAD 2006), R18.2 (CAD 2012), or R19.1 (CAD 2014).

Step 2:

Next, go to the following registry location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREAutodeskAutoCADR18.0

Right-click the R18.0 key and delete it as well.

Note: Based on testing, deleting this key is optional and can be left intact if preferred.

Step 3:

This step is crucial, as it involves the actual installation information of AutoCAD.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesInstallerProducts

Under this key, find and delete entries starting with 7D2F3875100*******.

Note: These keys store the AutoCAD installation source paths. Selecting one of these keys will display the installation details on the right pane.
