Error Prompt for Reinstallation When Starting AutoCAD
If AutoCAD closes immediately after launching, you might see an error message like this:
“This version of AutoCAD was not installed properly, and some features may not run correctly. You should reinstall AutoCAD immediately to ensure all features work properly. Do you wish to continue anyway?”
This issue is often caused by an incorrect entry in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.png registry key.
Specifically, the values within the content type keys may contain leading spaces.
In some cases, simply removing these leading spaces resolves the problem. Although Autodesk does not recommend or document the use of leading spaces in these values, users who have removed them have not reported any adverse effects on other applications.
To fix this:
- Run REGEDIT.
- Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.png. - Edit the content type value by removing any leading spaces.
If this solution does not apply or the issue persists, the errors may indicate corruption in the Microsoft® .NET Framework. This operating system component is essential for several AutoCAD features, including the Properties palette, Layer Manager, Ribbon, Menu Browser, Tooltips, and more.
To resolve .NET Framework issues:
- Open the Start menu (Windows) and go to Settings > Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs (Windows 2000/XP) or Programs and Features (Windows Vista and later).
- Uninstall all versions of the .NET Framework, starting with the latest version first.
- Reinstall only the .NET Framework version required for your AutoCAD version. Please refer to the list below for the correct version. For vertical products, consult the product installation documentation for the required .NET Framework version.
AutoCAD and .NET Framework Requirements:
- AutoCAD 2008 / AutoCAD LT 2008: .NET Framework 2.0
- AutoCAD 2009 / AutoCAD LT 2009: .NET Framework 3.0
- AutoCAD 2010 / AutoCAD LT 2010: .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
- AutoCAD 2011 / AutoCAD LT 2011: .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
