How to Create Composite Floor Slabs in Revit
In most cases, creating profiled floors with detailed 3D features in Revit is unnecessary and can significantly slow down the software’s performance. This is especially true for large steel structure factories or prefabricated buildings, where composite floor models are often required.
The best approach to balance the need for two-dimensional drawings while minimizing 3D model complexity—and to improve both model loading speed and display efficiency—is to use Revit’s built-in composite floor slabs.
Steps to Create Composite Floor Slabs:
-
Create Structural Floor Slabs
Navigate to the Structure tab → select Floor slab → then Structural floor to open the Create Floor command. Alternatively, use the shortcut keys SB to enter the structural floor editing mode.
-
Create a New Floor Type
In the Properties window, click Edit Type. In the pop-up Type Properties dialog, duplicate the existing floor type and rename it to Composite floor slab + thickness. For example: Composite floor slab 150mm.
-
Modify the Floor Structure
Click Type Parameters → Construction → Structure to open the floor layer construction window. Remove the Core boundary layer. Insert a new layer below the existing construction layer and set its function to Compression plate. Assign the material as Steel, carbon steel, adjust the structural layer thickness to 150mm.
-
Edit Profiled Plate Properties
Within Revit, the shape and purpose of the profiled plate can be customized and loaded as needed. The built-in profiled plates serve two purposes: either combined with the upper layer or as independent profiled plates. For example, you might have Shape Profiled Plate_non-composite: 40x150mm or Integrated with Upper Layer.
-
Create the Floor Slab
Click Draw on the tab bar, then select Pick up the support. Choose the centerline of the steel beam and draw the outline of the composite floor slab.
Click on the floor boundary line, then in the Modify | Create Floor Boundary tab, adjust the floor edge and profiled steel plate boundary. For example, a cantilever might have concrete extending -100mm and steel extending 50mm. Click Edit Mode to finalize and then Complete Edit Mode to finish.
