The permanent venue for the Western China International Expo in Chengdu—the first phase of the Western China International Expo City—is currently in its final stages of preparation before delivery and is set to officially open in June. According to the Southwest Branch of China Construction Second Engineering Bureau, this impressive “V” shaped landmark incorporates multiple advanced energy-saving and eco-friendly technologies, earning it outstanding “green credentials.”

The Western China International Expo serves as a crucial diplomatic, trade cooperation, and investment promotion platform for the western region of China. It also acts as a gateway supporting the development of the “Belt and Road” initiative. As the Expo’s permanent venue and the largest exhibition center in the western region, the China Western International Expo City covers a total constructed area of 760,000 square meters of prefabricated buildings. This includes 570,000 square meters dedicated to the first phase of the international exhibition and display center, capable of accommodating over 10,000 indoor international-standard booths.
To maximize usable space within the venue, the project employs a “pillarless design.” According to Yu Dehao, the project’s chief engineer, “There are no pillars inside the entire venue. The roof’s load-bearing capacity is supported by large-span prestressed shuttle trusses, with all columns positioned beneath the eaves.” This innovative design not only maximizes the available space but also enhances lighting and visual effects throughout the venue.

Yu Dehao also explained that the venue’s roof features a 16-story aluminum metal exterior designed for energy efficiency, insulation, ventilation, and rainwater collection. The harvested rainwater is reused for flushing, landscaping, and firefighting purposes. Additionally, the north-facing skylight allows natural light to flood the interior, reducing the need for artificial lighting during exhibitions.

In response to the initiative of building a “sponge city,” approximately 215,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition space, plazas, and parking areas have been constructed using permeable concrete. Yu Dehao noted that this material allows rainwater to seep underground, effectively eliminating surface water accumulation, replenishing groundwater, and mitigating urban heat island effects.
During an on-site visit by Xinhua News Agency Sichuan Channel, it was observed that water, electricity, and central air conditioning systems have been commissioned, with final adjustments underway. The venue is preparing for delivery in April and its inaugural exhibition in June. At that time, this expansive exhibition center—showcasing multiple advanced construction technologies and green development concepts from China—will welcome visitors and business representatives from around the world.
