Automating Beam and Column Cutting in Revit: A Practical Solution

Automatic Cutting Solutions for Beams and Columns in Revit

When working with Revit modeling, you may encounter situations where beams intersect but do not automatically cut each other. This issue also arises when columns intersect with beams, especially when using the same material such as precast concrete, as illustrated below.

Here are two methods to achieve proper cutting:

1. Double-click on the beam to open the beam family for editing. Then, in the Attributes panel, locate the option Hollow cut during loading and enable it. After that, reload the project, as shown in the image.

2. Go to the Modify tab, click on Cut, and select the cutting geometry from the dropdown list, as demonstrated in the figure.

Note: If your project contains multiple unattached voids, all of these voids will be involved in the cutting process.

Summary: When facing similar challenges during structural modeling, these methods can be used to complete the cutting or shearing between beams and beams, as well as beams and columns, making the modeling process more efficient.
