Using Revit’s Railings and Handrails Command to Create PVC Enclosure Walls
In many projects, residential walls are often constructed using PVC fence-style walls. This article briefly outlines a method for creating PVC fence-type walls in Revit by leveraging the Railings and Handrails command.
First, divide the fence into five distinct parts, as illustrated in the diagram: Top Armrest, Bottom Armrest, Starting Post, End Post, and Railing Panel.
Using the default Revit family templates such as Metric Railing – Rail, Metric Railing – Post, and Metric Railing – Panel, create families for each component of the enclosure wall. Configure the railing outline, posts, and panels accordingly, and assign the appropriate materials. Note that size parameters can be customized based on your specific requirements.
Next, start a new project and load the previously created families—railing outline, posts, and panels—into it. Use the Handrails / Drawing Paths command to open the Type Properties dialog box and adjust settings to suit your design.
Once the setup is complete, draw the model within the project as shown below:
Switch to a plan view, select the created railing model, and click the Edit Path command.
Then use the Split Elements command to divide the path at the appropriate locations. Click OK to place the next post.
Repeat this process to add additional posts as needed.
