How to Scale Up CAD Drawings Imported into Revit for Better Accuracy

How to Modify CAD Drawings Imported into Revit That Appear Too Small

When importing CAD drawings into Revit, it’s common to encounter scale issues, causing the drawings to appear very small within the Revit view. Correcting this often involves returning to CAD software to adjust the scale, which can be time-consuming. So, how can you make these adjustments directly within Revit?

1. First, open the drawing in your CAD software and verify the unit settings. Use the shortcut key “UN” to open the units panel and select the appropriate units according to your actual requirements. Typically, units are set to millimeters, as illustrated below.

2. In Revit, go to the Insert tab and use the Import CAD (or Link CAD) command. Select the saved CAD drawing, and be sure to set the imported units to match those used in the CAD file, as shown in the example.

3. If the imported CAD drawing appears very small, this usually indicates that the drawing scale was not properly adjusted during import, as demonstrated below.

4. To fix this, select the imported drawing, then click the Zoom command under the Modify tab. Click once to set the origin point, then click a second point to define a drag point. You can either drag to enlarge the drawing or enter an exact scale value to resize it to its actual dimensions, as shown in the figure.

By following these steps, you can quickly adjust the scale of drawings within Revit without needing to return to your CAD software. Additionally, this process introduces you to using the Zoom command under the Modify tab, which can significantly speed up your modeling workflow.
