The most common excuse design firms give for not adopting BIM is the lack of complete software tools. Similarly, the biggest misconception about BIM within these companies revolves around software limitations.
While software undeniably plays a role in BIM implementation, it should never be seen as the core issue or used as a barrier to progress. As software continues to improve and the market matures, enterprise investment in BIM-related solutions will naturally increase. With the ongoing expansion and deepening of BIM applications, more companies are expected to commit resources to this area.
Although many secondary development software vendors built on AutoCAD have yet to fully invest in BIM, it remains their primary opportunity. In fact, truly forward-thinking software providers are shifting their focus away from simply creating professional tools. Instead, they are developing comprehensive digital delivery platforms and operation and maintenance systems tailored for BIM.
For design companies leading the way in BIM adoption, attempting to enter the software market themselves generally offers little chance of success.
