Exporting Views and Drawings to DWG or DXF Format in Revit: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Export One or More Views and Drawings to DWG or DXF Format in Revit

1. Go to the “File” tab → Export → CAD Formats → DWG or DXF.

2. In the “DWG (or DXF) Export” dialog box, select “Export Settings” and choose your desired options.

To modify the selected settings or create new ones, click Modify Export Settings. For detailed instructions, please refer to the section on Modifying DWG/DXF Export Settings.

3. Choose the views and drawings you want to export.

4. When ready, click “Next”.

Alternatively, to save the current export settings without exporting, click “Save Settings and Close”.

5. In the “Export CAD Format” dialog box, complete the following steps:

  • Specify the destination folder for the exported files.
  • Under “File Type”, select the AutoCAD version for the DWG/DXF export.
  • Under “Naming”, choose an option to automatically generate file names.

If you want to export any Revit project items or DWG links as a single file (rather than multiple files that reference each other), make sure to uncheck the “Export views and links on sheets as external references” option.

Click “Confirm” to start exporting. Revit will export the selected views and drawings and save the files in the specified folder.

To cancel the export process, click “Cancel” on the status bar. If multiple views and drawings are being exported, all related export operations will be stopped.

Exporting Background Images

If the DWG export includes drawings with background images, you may need to edit the background image within the exported DWG file. To ensure the image displays correctly in AutoCAD, adjust the print settings accordingly:

Open AutoCAD, go to Page Setup Manager, clear the selection, and finally print the paper space.

Exporting Colors

When exporting a 3D view to DWG or DXF format, colors are handled as follows:

  • Edge Color: Since edge colors are not rendered in AutoCAD, they are ignored during export. This ensures that shading and realistic views are displayed correctly. (Edge replacements will no longer apply to the entire model.)
  • Phase Color: Supports color replacement on solid fills during export, but does not support color replacement on fill patterns.

Exporting Lines

When exporting a 2D view to a DWG file, line handling works as follows:

  • If two overlapping lines exist, the thicker line is retained while thinner lines are shortened or removed.
  • If a thick line is shorter than a thin line, and its endpoints lie on the thin line, no changes are made.
  • Collinear lines with identical visual properties are merged into one. For more details, see the section on exporting models with overlapping lines.
  • When walls are converted to lines in DWG, short collinear lines are not created.
