How to Automatically Control the Number of Backups Generated When Saving in Revit
Revit includes a built-in version management feature for model files, which allows you to access the latest modifications from previously backed-up projects. When you save a file, Revit automatically appends a version number to the file name on your hard drive.
For example, the first time you save a project, the file might be named Project 1.rvt. When you save it again, Revit will rename the last saved file to Project 1.0001.rvt. Each subsequent save increments this number: Project 1.0002.rvt, and so on, until the maximum backup limit is reached. Once this limit is hit, Revit will begin deleting the oldest backup files to make room for new ones.
How to Set the Number of Backups Automatically Generated When Saving in Revit:
- Click Start → Save As → Project.
- In the Save As dialog box, click the Options button.
- In the File Retention Options window, adjust the Maximum Backup Amount to control how many backup files Revit will keep automatically when saving.
