How to Convert CAD Frames to Revit Frames in Revit
When working in Revit, it’s often necessary to use project-specific frames. Manually drawing these frames can be tedious and time-consuming. If you already have a CAD frame available, you can convert it into a Revit family for easier use. Here, we will use the example of creating an A3 frame.
1. Open Revit and create a new family. In the dialog box that appears, navigate to the folder indicated in the title bar: A3 Metric System > Frame Template, as shown below.
2. Go to the Insert tab and select the Import CAD command, as illustrated in the image.
3. Choose the appropriate CAD file, configure the import options to suit your needs, and click Open, as demonstrated.
4. Align the imported CAD frame carefully to the edges of the Revit frame template, following the example in the image.
5. Select the imported CAD element, then choose Decompose > Fully Decompose. This action converts the CAD frame into editable lines within Revit.
6. Modify the title block as needed and add the relevant tags, as shown in the accompanying figure.
7. Load the family into your project for testing. You will find that the text is now editable and the frame meets your project requirements, as demonstrated in the image.
Summary: This method allows you to quickly create frames that comply with your project specifications by converting existing CAD frames into editable Revit families.
