The Role of Revit Family Type Properties in Locking Dimensions (Parameters)
This topic covers a broad range of concepts, so let’s begin by understanding a few key points.
Function of Locking Parameters
The locking parameters found in the family type property panel are linked to the parameters added in the vertical 3D view. When a single parameter in the type properties is checked and confirmed, its corresponding parameter in the vertical 3D view will also be locked. Conversely, a locked parameter in the view will be associated with the family type property. Please refer to the view below for clarification.
Once a parameter is locked, its value is fixed and cannot be changed unless the lock is released.
“Dead Clan” vs. “Living Clan”
“Dead Clan” means that the family parameter values cannot be modified within the project once created. They exist in only one fixed form throughout the project. Many engineers prefer this method because it is simple and easy to create.
“Living Clan”, on the other hand, allows parameters such as length, width, and height to be adjusted within the project. Families of the same type can be transformed into multiple different variations based on their size parameters.
When Should You Lock Parameters?
Why is it sometimes necessary to lock parameters when drawing a family? Can these parameters be unlocked later? Locking parameters is highly effective in minimizing displacement of components controlled by those parameters. When parameters are locked, dragging reference lines or components—without using the move tool—will not cause deformation of the family you created.
