How to Create Exterior Finishes for Columns in Revit
Step 1: Navigate to Metric Structural Columns and create a new structural column family using the appropriate family template. Lock the four edges and reference lines of the column, as well as the top, bottom, and elevation constraints. Then, go to Manage > Object Styles to open the Object Styles dialog box. Here, create a new subcategory for structural columns named Exterior Decoration, and define the properties for this subcategory accordingly.
Step 2: Using the solid extrusion modeling tool, first create the main column model. Then, apply the solid extrusion tool again to create the exterior surface model around the outside of the column. The extrusion sketch is illustrated in the figure below.
Step 3: In the Extrusion Properties dialog box, assign the extrusion to the Exterior Decoration subcategory, as shown in the accompanying image.
Step 4: Select the exterior surface extrusion, and on the options bar, click the Visibility button. This will open the Family Element Visibility Settings dialog box. Under Detail Level, check only the Fine option. This means the extrusion will only be visible when the view’s detail level is set to Fine. Click OK to confirm these visibility settings.
Note: When this family is loaded into your project, the exterior finish of the structural column will only display when the view’s detail level is set to Fine.
