Collision Detection Differences Between Navisworks and Revit Explained

Difference in Collision Checking between Navisworks and Revit

Both Navisworks and Revit offer model collision detection capabilities. During the modeling phase, it is often more convenient to use Revit’s built-in collision checking features. For instance, in civil engineering projects, coordination between the architectural and structural models can be performed to ensure proper alignment and integration.

Similarly, in HVAC modeling, combining architectural, structural, and various mechanical and electrical models allows for comprehensive coordination checks. This process helps identify issues early on and facilitates timely adjustments.

Revit

The primary advantage of using Revit for collision detection lies in its ability to perform checks during the modeling process. This enables users to detect and resolve conflicts in real time. However, when integrating an entire project model, Revit demands significant computer resources. Handling large models can become challenging, which limits its efficiency for full-project coordination.

Navisworks

Navisworks excels at integrating multiple models and conducting thorough collision checks across the entire project. Another limitation of Revit is that its current versions only detect hard collisions—meaning physical overlaps between objects.

However, engineering collision detection also includes soft collisions, sometimes referred to as “gap collisions.” These refer to insufficient clearances that, while not involving direct physical contact, still violate space requirements necessary for installation and maintenance. For example, HVAC systems must maintain adequate gaps for proper access, and a lack of space constitutes a collision.

Navisworks supports this type of inspection, allowing users to identify and address soft collisions effectively.

In summary, the strengths and limitations of collision detection in Navisworks and Revit can be compared in the following table:
