The Function of Saving a Revit View as a New File
Have you ever noticed a useful feature in Revit during your daily work? Today, I want to talk about the “Save to a New File” function and its purpose. Let’s explore what it does.
First, open a project, such as the first floor plan of a residential building, which was previously shared on the forum.
Next, right-click on the name of this view in the Project Browser. In the context menu, you will see an option labeled “Save to a New File”.
Choosing this option will save the selected view as a separate file. What kind of file will it be? Take a look at the example below:
This file contains no general drawings, schedules, or elevation and section views. Instead, it only includes the detailed views related to the selected view and its associated 3D model.
In summary, this feature saves all the 3D models and detailed views connected to the selected view as an independent file.
So, what can you do with this feature?
Firstly, it allows you to streamline your model by isolating specific 2D and 3D information related to the view without losing any detail.
Secondly, when collaborating with third parties, it helps protect sensitive or unnecessary project information by sharing only the relevant parts.
Let’s take this a step further: what if you export a detailed drawing instead of a floor plan? For example, try exporting a kitchen detail. Here’s what the result looks like:
Does this make your model discussions more focused and practical? Absolutely!
