Key Considerations for Removing Unused Items in Revit

Important Considerations When Clearing Unused Items in Revit

The Clear Unused Items command allows you to unload unused families and family types from your project, which helps reduce the overall file size. If your project has working sets enabled, make sure all working sets are open before using this command.

To access this feature, go to the File menu and select Clear Unused Items. This will open the Clear Unused Items dialog box, which displays all families and family types eligible for removal. The layout resembles the Project Browser’s tree structure, allowing you to expand or collapse sections by clicking the + and signs.

Select the families you wish to unload from the tree structure. To select all families at once, click Select All. To deselect all selected families, click Deselect All.

Once your selection is complete, click Confirm to proceed with clearing the unused items. If you decide not to continue, click Cancel to abort the operation.

Note: After executing this command, each system family will retain at least one type even if it is not actively used in the project. (A system family refers to any family that cannot be created from a family template file.)
