Creating Pipeline Legends That Automatically Update with Project Settings in Revit
In Revit, you can draw actual pipelines on a floor plan, add markers and icons to serve as legends. Since the legend resides within the project file, any changes made will be automatically reflected in the model. This allows users to verify relevant settings before starting the project. Furthermore, any modifications to the settings during the project are adjusted in the legend automatically. To prevent pipelines in the legend view from affecting the project file, you can assign these pipelines to a specialized “Stage.”
Step 1:
Create a plan view specifically for drawing the legend. In the Project Browser, select an existing plan view, right-click to open the context menu, and choose Copy View. Then, in the instance properties of the copied view, rename the View Name to “Pipeline Legend” and change the Discipline parameter to “Coordination.” This ensures the legend view is distinguished from other professional design views.
Step 2:
Draw pipelines for different systems and add tags. Use the pipeline tools to draw pipelines for each system, then set the line type, line width, and color in the type properties according to the system, as illustrated in Figure 1-1.
Afterward, use the Tag command to label the pipelines. Tags can be configured to show the System Abbreviation, assigning abbreviations to different pipeline types, such as drainage pipes, as shown in Figure 1-2.
Step 3:
Place various pipeline accessories and tag them accordingly. Load the required pipeline fittings and position them on the legend view. Add tags to each accessory by using the Type Mark parameter as labels, demonstrated in Figure 1-3.
Step 4:
Add table lines and text annotations. Under the Annotate tab, use the Detail Line and Text commands to draw tables and insert explanatory text for the legend.
Step 5:
Create a drawing sheet and place the legend on it. In the Project Browser, right-click the Sheets node, select New Sheet, and choose the appropriate title block. If you prefer not to display the sheet title, select the viewport, click Edit Type, and set the Display Title option to “No,” as shown in Figure 1-4.
Step 6:
Create a dedicated “Stage” to place the legends, preventing them from affecting material quantity calculations. Go to the Manage tab, click Phases, and under New Construction, insert a new phase named “Legend.” Click OK to confirm, as illustrated in Figure 1-5.
