Experience with CAD Layout
1. It is generally recommended to add annotations in paper space. While annotating in model space is possible, it is not commonly supported or preferred.
2. I do not oppose placing annotations or comments in model space, nor do I intend to discourage it. The field of CAD expertise is broad. In some cases—such as when working with large graphics or complex drawings—certain annotations and notes are predefined from the start. In these situations, adding annotations directly in model space can be helpful for quick reference and to avoid interrupting your workflow by constantly switching views or referring to external graphics. Of course, it is often more appropriate to place annotations in paper space. Additionally, annotations for externally referenced graphics should already be included in model space; otherwise, what purpose does referencing graphics without annotations serve?
3. One reason why annotation in model space is often discouraged relates to scaling issues. If scale conversion is required, it raises the question: why use layouts at all? In my view, the main advantage of using layouts is that you can avoid the hassle and confusion related to scale conversions. Therefore, besides annotating in paper space, it is also possible to add annotations within the activated viewport (which is essentially floating model space). This approach allows annotations and comments to exist both in model space and on layouts, maintaining consistency and uniformity. It also frees annotations from being limited to drawing space alone.
4. That said, don’t get too caught up in strict rules. Although I have emphasized that annotating in model space is generally impractical and not recommended, sometimes it can be very convenient and efficient. For example, if you know the viewport scale of the graphic you’re working on, you can quickly change the global scale value to match it—perhaps using shortcut keys. This makes temporary adjustments easy. Afterward, simply return to model space and reset the scale back to zero.
