Creating a Universal Retro Desk Family in Revit

Universal Retro Desk Family Production in Revit

In a Han Dynasty-style hotel design project, a series of ancient furniture models were created. The Han Dynasty aesthetic emphasizes simplicity and grandeur, avoiding the ornate details common in later periods such as the Qing Dynasty. Here, I have modeled a Han-style desk as a Revit family, offering a universal desk design widely recognized in China.

1. Start by opening Revit in metric mode and creating a reference plane. This plane will serve as the basis for defining parameters like the length and width of the tabletop and legs.

2. Switch to the front elevation view and set two dimensions: the desk height and the thickness of the tabletop.

3. Use the stretch tool to create four legs, aligning them symmetrically by using a reference plane and symmetry constraints. Then, add parameters to control the length and width of each leg.

4. Extend the legs below the reference plane and lock their position. Assign appropriate material properties to the legs at this stage.

5. Use the stretch tool again to create the side crossbars that connect the legs.

6. In the plan view, stretch the crossbars to the desired thickness and define parameters for their size. Lock their position vertically, then use the mirror tool to copy and place additional horizontal bars as needed.

7. Next, add panels to the left, right, and rear surfaces of the desk. Assign parameters and materials to each panel. Note that this design is optimized for a top panel structure.

8. Switch back to the front view and, using the previously established approach, set parameters for the length, height, and thickness of the drawer front. Considering durability and the demands of hotel use, specific design choices were made here.

9. Add horizontal support bars below the left and right sides, and optionally one at the bottom of the back panel for extra stability. I believe that simpler hotel furniture designs work best, though this may contrast with typical furniture factory practices.

10. Below is a list of all adjustable parameters available for this versatile Han-style desk family.
