How to Add Horizontal Sections in Revit
In Revit software, especially in China, it is easy to quickly add vertical sections in both plan and elevation views. However, adding horizontal sections or upward-looking sections in elevation views can be more challenging.
Drawing Horizontal and Vertical Sections in a Plan View
When switching to the east and north facades, only Section 1 and Section 2 are displayed respectively.
With the appropriate editing and settings, you can also draw horizontal sections directly in elevation views.
Alternatively, you can follow these specific steps:
- In the facade view, go to the View panel and select the Profile tool. Then, in the Element Properties, change the type to Detailed View.
- Draw the section range, then use the Flip Symbol control located at the bottom left corner to adjust the view direction, as shown in the figure.
Note:
Among the two types of sections, detailed views allow you to draw horizontal sections directly on the elevation.
Another simpler but less refined method is to select the section and rotate it by 90 degrees. This works, but the corresponding section will no longer appear in the plan view.
About Detailed Views
Detailed views in Revit can be created either as sections or as detail indexes.
When created as a detail index, the detail can include section annotations and detail index annotations that are assigned to it. This means a detailed view created as a detail index can also be displayed as a section within any view that intersects the scope of that detail index.
For example, you can use a detail index to create a detailed view of wall intersections. This detail index can then be displayed as a section view in the architectural section perspective.
To display the detailed index in the building section perspective view, ensure the Display Mode instance parameter is set to Intersection View in the Attributes palette.
Note: The Display Mode attribute does not apply when creating detailed drawings as sections. By default, section markers are visible in all intersecting views.
