How to Create Simple Parametric Geometry in Revit
1. Double-click to launch the Revit software. Once opened, the interface shown below will appear. Click the “New” button under the Family section, as illustrated.
2. In the dialog box that opens, select the “Metric Standard Model” family template, then click “Open,” as shown in the image.
3. Click the Create tab, then select Reference Plane. Choose the Pick Line tool, enter the desired offset value (e.g., 500) in the offset field, and move your mouse over the original reference line. This will copy reference lines of equal length centered on the original reference line. Hover over the reference line to use it as the center line for copying, as demonstrated below.
4. After drawing all the reference lines, click the Align tool to dimension and lock the distances of each reference line, as shown.
5. Go to the Create tab and select the Stretch tool. Draw a rectangle by selecting the corners, then click the checkmark to complete the operation, as seen here.
6. Click the 3D View button and switch to shaded display mode to view the model, as shown in the image below.
7. Select the object and adjust its depth parameter to change its height, demonstrated in the figure.
8. Switch to the Reference Elevation view, select the object, and then click the Edit Stretch button, as illustrated.
9. Enter a value (e.g., 200) in the offset field. Click the Pick Line command and click on an empty space. Hover your mouse over the line until a dotted line appears. Press the Tab key to copy a square, then click the checkmark to finish. Finally, switch back to the 3D view to see the updated model, as shown.
10. Select the object, then choose Edit Stretch to delete the internal graphic lines. Click the 3D View button to view the result, as depicted below.
11. Add annotations in the 3D view by selecting the Aligned Dimension tool, then selecting one face followed by another. This process allows you to control parameters through annotation, as shown in the image.
12. Select the dimension value, then click the “Add Parameter” tab. In the parameter properties dialog box that appears, enter the parameter name (e.g., Length: L) and click “OK.” This completes the creation of the first length parameter, as shown.
13. To add a parameter to the second length, select the dimension value and choose the previously created parameter from the label dropdown. This completes the second length parameter, as illustrated.
14. To link parameters to the height of a 3D shape, select the shape and click the button behind the stretch endpoint. In the dialog box that appears, select the existing family parameter (L). This ensures that changing one parameter updates all related dimensions accordingly, as demonstrated below.
