Why BIM Implementation Is Essential

The Necessity of BIM Application

BIM Technology has been developing steadily in the engineering industries of Europe and America for many years, with an increasing number of successful implementation cases. Its advantages are clear when compared to traditional methods. In fact, the United States has established the National BIM Standard (NBIMS) to guide the industry, and the General Services Administration (GSA) has set BIM drawing delivery standards. These milestones highlight the maturity and benefits of BIM in engineering projects.

The preface of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Chairman’s National BIM Standard (NBIMS) V1-P1 Manual explains that whether BIM refers to a product—Building Information Modeling (a structured dataset of a building), an activity—the act of creating a building information model, or a system—Building Information Management (business processes that improve information exchange quality and efficiency), it consistently helps reduce industrial waste, adds value to products, minimizes environmental impact, and enhances resident engagement. BIM Technology delivers efficiency far beyond any previous methods.

By utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) in actual construction projects, the process emphasizes digitization and parameterization. It provides real-time project information covering design, management, detailed documentation, and cost data. This ensures high quality, reliability, and coordination of project information, significantly improving overall construction efficiency and addressing issues related to information backflow.

BIM also supports analyzing electromechanical system information processing requirements throughout their lifecycle. It establishes a standardized attribute architecture for electromechanical graphic components and extends this standardization on platforms like Autodesk Revit MEP. This allows comprehensive multi-dimensional attribute data to be described, meeting the detailed information needs of project planning and construction control.

Leveraging BIM’s advanced parametric design, information transmission, integration capabilities, and simulation functions, this study develops practical use cases for conflict detection, material quantity calculation, construction drawing production, and scheduling during the construction phase. Applying BIM methods in construction management helps integrate information, enabling managers and workers to share and exchange data through BIM models. This promotes a clear understanding of project requirements and information flow, ultimately enhancing construction management efficiency.

In addition, integrating building fire monitoring systems into BIM creates a unified platform for fire sensors and monitors. By importing sensor, monitor, and spatial data into the Building Information Model, management can quickly verify alarm authenticity when a sensor is triggered. This reduces false alarms and public alarm fatigue. Moreover, it enables rapid identification of fire locations, assisting emergency responders to promptly reach and address incidents in large buildings.

That concludes the discussion on the necessity of BIM application. I hope this article has been helpful to everyone!
