How to Transfer System Families Between Different Projects in Revit
In Revit software, system families are built-in elements that cannot be loaded from external files or saved as standalone files. To reuse a system family type across projects, you need to use the transfer function between two projects. Follow these steps to accomplish this:
(1) Open both projects simultaneously within the same Revit session — one containing the desired system family and the other where you want to transfer it.
(2) In the project where you want to transfer the system family, go to the ribbon and select Manage > Transfer Project Standards, as shown in the figure below:
(3) In the pop-up window titled Select the project to copy from, choose the project containing the system family from the Copy from dropdown menu. Then, select the specific system family type you wish to transfer from the list.
(4) To transfer all available items, click Select All. However, it is usually best to only check the standards you need to avoid unintended changes to project settings. Be aware that some related settings, like view templates, should be transferred together with filters and fill styles to maintain their intended appearance and functionality.
(5) Click OK (or Confirm). The selected system family type will then be transferred to your current project. If the dialog box indicates a Duplicate type, you can choose to either overwrite the existing type or only import new types based on your needs.
