The Importance of BIM Cloud Platforms in Modern Construction

The Significance of the BIM Cloud Platform

BIM History
With the advancement of computer technology, the origins of BIM date back to the 1960s, a time when computer information technology was still in its infancy and relied heavily on manual programming and methods. It wasn’t until the 1980s, with the emergence of personal computers, that users gained access to graphical operating interfaces and computer-aided design (CAD), which greatly simplified complex operations and improved efficiency. The 1990s saw a leap forward in computing power, leading to the rise of digital modeling. Subsequently, the expansion of network technologies enabled BIM models to transition into cloud-based online platforms.

What is BIM?
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is an innovative visual representation tool developed over many years in Europe and North America. Several governments have established BIM standards to enhance the use of traditional floor plans. By importing detailed information, BIM allows users to understand complex building structures and forms, supports project management and cost estimation, and provides insights into the entire building lifecycle. This paves the way for sustainable construction practices in the future.

Traditionally, BIM was primarily based on 2D CAD drawings, which posed limitations due to their planar nature. Meanwhile, point cloud models, composed of clusters of three-dimensional points with spatial coordinates, lacked component information. However, recent technological advances have enabled the integration of point cloud models into BIM in a parametric fashion. Using point cloud data to build BIM models of historical sites allows for parametric and visual representations of their maintenance, which supports better preservation and management of heritage buildings.

The construction industry is a major consumer of energy and materials. Effective management of building properties and minimizing unnecessary resource consumption can extend the lifespan of structures and reduce operational and maintenance costs. This article explores the integration of property management with construction management. BIM cloud platforms facilitate seamless information exchange between architects and owners, reducing turnaround times and design errors. Further project management can incorporate monitoring and analysis software to track progress, estimate costs, and maintain a comprehensive understanding of building information. By comparing calculation methods and importing BIM data, we can better understand how point cloud models convert and apply within BIM environments.

Focusing on historical buildings, a new modeling process using BIM is proposed. First, a high-precision laser scanner generates a point cloud model. Then, scale information is extracted from this model and imported into BIM. Finally, a finite element model is created to simulate current load distributions through mechanical analysis, providing critical data for future risk management and disaster prevention.

BIM is presented as a digital 3D model rather than a simple assembly of geometric elements like points, lines, and surfaces. Its components—such as columns, beams, walls, doors, and windows—correspond to real-world objects. This means BIM not only offers clear visualizations that help clients grasp spatial configurations but also contains extensive attribute data, enhancing management and practical applications. By leveraging BIM’s capabilities to integrate data from various sources, it is possible to build detailed point cloud models of indoor pipelines from different periods using high-precision laser scanners and experiment with various scanning techniques.

That concludes our discussion on the significance of the BIM cloud platform. I hope this article provides valuable insights and assistance to everyone interested in this field!
