How to Create a Central File in Revit
When working with Revit on large-scale projects—often spanning tens of thousands of square meters and involving multiple disciplines—it’s essential to enable efficient collaboration among team members. The best way to achieve this in Revit is through the use of worksets, as linked model collaboration does not support automatic updates.
Below is a step-by-step guide to creating a central file in Revit:
1. Open your project model and navigate to the Collaboration tab. Then click the Worksets button, as shown in Figure 1. Alternatively, you can click the workspace icon located on the right side of the status bar.
2. In the pop-up dialog box titled Worksharing, click OK. A second Worksets dialog box will appear; click OK again to confirm.
3. Save the model to a designated location on your company server.
4. Open the workset and set the existing worksets to non-editable. Then, click the sync shortcut button to synchronize your changes.
5. Close the model. When reopening it from the central file location within the software, make sure to check the New Local File option. Note: All team members must open the model this way and select the New Local File option.
6. Each discipline or team member can create their own workset—either by trade or by individual name. After creating a workset, synchronize your changes to the central file, then set your workset to non-editable.
7. Finally, update your active workset on the right side of the status bar to reflect your current work, as demonstrated in the figure below.
