Filtering Cable Trays in Revit
In Revit software, plumbing, drainage, and HVAC models can be organized and managed using systems. However, cable trays do not have such a system classification. To differentiate between categories and uses of cable trays, you can create filters by adding cable trays and cable tray accessory filters with different colors. This also allows you to temporarily hide trays that do not need to be displayed.
Here’s how to create a new filter for cable trays, using fire protection trays as an example:
1. Go to the View tab and click on Filters (or press the shortcut keys VV to open the Visibility/Graphics window, then select Filters).
2. In the Filters window, click New and enter a name for the filter, such as Fire Bridge. Click OK.
3. In the newly opened Filter dialog, under Categories, check both Cable Tray and Cable Tray Accessories.
4. Under Filter Rules, select Type Name Includes “Fire Bridge”. Click OK to complete the filter creation.
5. To visually distinguish different types of cable trays, you can assign color fills. Open the Visibility/Graphics window again (shortcut VV), find the newly created Fire Bridge filter under the Filters tab, and add it.
6. Click on the Fill Pattern option and choose a color to fill the cable trays.
There are two important points to note: First, when creating the filter, ensure the filter rule uses Includes rather than Equals. Using Equals might cause the joints (cable tray accessories) to not be filled with color properly, and if you hide the trays, only the cable trays will be hidden while the accessories remain visible.
Second, when modeling the cable tray support frames, make sure to include the Cable Tray Accessories category appropriately; otherwise, the same issue may occur. The following image illustrates this.
