How to Create Family Template Files in Revit
In Revit, while it is possible to save a project file as a project template, saving a family file directly as a family template is not supported. However, creating a family template file is achievable by modifying the family file itself.
Follow these steps to create a family template file:
- Open the Computer icon on your desktop, then click on the Organize tab, and select Folder and Search Options.
- In the Folder Options dialog box, go to the View tab. Under the settings, find and uncheck the option labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
- Locate the family file you want to convert, then rename the file extension from
.rfato.rft. - When prompted with a confirmation dialog, click Yes to confirm the file extension change.
- This process converts the family file into a family template file.
Why convert family files into family template files?
When creating families in Revit, many types may share common characteristics. By converting these shared families into family template files, you can establish a universal editing environment tailored for creating similar families. This approach helps streamline your workflow and significantly improves efficiency.
