Question:
When you open a file in Revit, you receive the following error message: “The data in the (filename) file is damaged and needs to be manually repaired.”
Answer:
First, check if there is sufficient free space on your hard drive. This error may occur if Revit cannot expand the project in the Temp directory (%TMP%).
If your system has at least 5 GB of available disk space, and clearing the temporary folder does not resolve the issue, follow the steps provided in the links below to restore a backup copy based on your file type:
For non work-shared files: Restore non work-shared files
For work-shared files: Backup of recovered work-shared files
If you are able to open the file, please follow these steps:
- In the dialog box that appears, check the box and then open the file.
- Navigate to Manage > Clear Unused Items.
- Go to the Application Menu, select Save As, and save the file with a new name.
- Switch to your desktop and open Windows Explorer (press Windows key + E). In the address bar, type
%temp%. - Delete as many files as possible from this folder. Note that some files may not be deletable if they are currently in use by other applications.
- Move your local files and backups to the desktop.
- Open Revit.
- Open your file, create a new section, and check in project files.
If you cannot open the backup file:
Create a new central file from an existing local file by following the steps outlined in this document: Create a central model from an existing shared workspace file.
