How to Choose Templates for the Revit Family in BIM Software?
Revit offers a wide range of family templates tailored to different purposes and types. When creating a family, the first step is to select the appropriate family template. This template predefines the family category and includes some default parameters that the new family will inherit. These parameter types include Family Parameters and Shared Parameters.
Family Parameters are further divided into two types: Instance Parameters and Type Parameters. Instance parameters appear in the family’s Element Properties dialog box, while type parameters are displayed in the Type Properties dialog box. Shared parameters will be discussed in more detail in the fourth point later. Revit also allows you to add any necessary parameters to a new family as needed.
When you load the completed family into a project, Revit automatically categorizes it in the type selector of the corresponding command on the Design Bar, based on the family category defined by the initially chosen template. For example, if you create a beam family, it will be classified under the Beam category in the command interface and included in that category’s detailed list.
It is important to note that the family types that can be included in detailed schedules are fixed. Families created under standard templates cannot be included in detailed schedules for volume, length, width, or similar measurements—they can only be counted by number.
For instance, when creating a new family and selecting a template file, if the family needs to be placed on a sloped surface, you should use the Surface-Based Metric Generic Model template. The Wall-Based Metric Generic Model or Floor-Based Metric Generic Model templates would not be appropriate in this scenario.
