BIM Software Tip: Understanding PDF File Size Differences Between DWG and AutoCAD Versions
Question:
When printing PDF files from Autodesk® AutoCAD® or vertical applications such as Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, users often notice that PDFs generated by newer versions tend to be larger in file size. This issue is especially noticeable when image data is included.
Example:
Graphics containing background images were printed using AutoCAD versions 2013 and 2015, both at a resolution of 600 DPI.
The resulting PDF file sizes were approximately 16 MB for the 2013 version and 38 MB for the 2015 version.
Cause:
The PDF printing driver behavior changed between these versions. In AutoCAD 2013, the image included in the PDF was actually printed at 300 DPI, despite the 600 DPI setting. However, in AutoCAD 2015, the images were printed at the full 600 DPI resolution, resulting in larger file sizes.
Solution:
To reduce the PDF file size, it is recommended to lower the image resolution when printing. Typically, 300 DPI is sufficient for most conventional plotters and will help keep the PDF file size manageable without compromising print quality.
