How to Efficiently Share Network Working Copies Across Paths

BIM Software Tip: How to Effectively Share NWC Files on Network Paths

At first glance, you might think, “What’s so complicated about this? Just copy the NWC files to a shared directory.” However, the real challenge lies in sharing NWC files in real-time among multiple users. Specifically, when NWC files are stored in a shared directory, multiple users need to access and collaborate on them simultaneously, as illustrated below.

If several users want to open the same or multiple NWC files at once—whether individually or as attachments within an NWF—normally, the software locks the file when it is opened. This means only one user can access it at a time. Fortunately, Navisworks offers a useful option to address this issue, demonstrated in the image below:

Enabling this option allows you to view the files while other users can open and edit them concurrently. Once everyone selects this setting, the NWCs or NWDs in the shared folder won’t be locked exclusively by any single user. This enables effective collaboration and helps maintain consistent file versions across the team.
