Importing 3D MAX DWG Files into Revit While Preserving Material Settings

BIM Software Tip: When importing 3D MAX files into Revit, use the DWG format to preserve material settings.

There are two common formats for importing Max files into Revit: FBX and DWG. By default, FBX includes material information, whereas DWG does not. For this reason, FBX is typically the preferred export format. However, FBX is not ideal for exporting mechanical and electrical equipment models because it generates a high number of faces and points, which can make the scene appear less smooth.

To address this, we recommend exporting in DWG format with some specific settings to retain material information.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. From the color list, choose True Colors.

2. When importing the Max file, enable the option to split layers by material.

By following these steps, material information will be retained. You can then use the eyedropper tool in the material editor to extract and modify materials as needed.
