BIM Software Tip: How to Set Elevation Names in Revit
When creating elevations, we often want them to be labeled as 1F, 2F, 3F, and so on, with automatic numbering. However, in practice, if you set the elevation name as 1F in the template file and then create elevations in a new project, the labels might appear as 1G, 1H, etc. Why does this happen? (See the image below)
This behavior is related to Revit’s automatic naming system. Revit uses the last character in the name to determine the sequence for numbering. For example, when generating grid lines, the axis numbers follow alphabetical and numerical order. So, if the elevation is named 1F in the template, Revit will continue with 1G, 1H, and so forth in the project.
If you want the numbering to increase as 1F, 2F, 3F, etc., you can change the naming convention by switching from “1F” to “F1” in the template. In the new project, the elevations will then be labeled as F2, F3, F4, and so on. This method allows you to control the numbering sequence according to your preference (as illustrated in the image).
However, construction drawings typically use the format 1F, 2F, 3F, and so on. To achieve this, you need to modify the header family. First, locate the header family that requires editing in the Project Browser (see image below).
Once inside the family editor, select the name label and click “Edit Label” under the Modify Label tab. In the dialog box that appears, enter an uppercase “F” in the suffix field and click OK (refer to the image).
Finally, save the changes and load the updated family back into your project. Now, when you copy or array the elevations, the names will follow the sequence 1F, 2F, 3F, as desired. See the example in the image below.
