BIM Software Tip: How to Add Angle Parameters for Enclosed Shapes in Revit Volumes
When controlling the angle of line segments, we can directly assign angle parameters to control their rotation since line segments have clear start and end points. But how do we handle angle parameters for closed shapes like circles and rectangles?
To address this, we can analyze the problem from a different perspective. If we cannot directly assign an angle parameter, we can add an indirect reference instead. In the case of volumes, the instance property called “Click” includes an angle parameter. This allows us to control the rotation angle of an enclosed shape through points. Let’s walk through the steps below:
1: First, create a point, ideally positioned at the center of the shape:
2: To create a closed shape based on this point, set the work plane to the location of the point:
3: Add an angle parameter to the point. This achieves the following:
This angle parameter controls the rotation of the enclosed shape within the volume. But what if you’re working in a regular family? In that case, you can use nested forms.
So, what is the practical use of this angle parameter? It is especially valuable for analyzing architectural forms, and it becomes even more powerful when combined with adaptive components.
