Understanding the Distinct Functions of Revit Move Commands

BIM Software Tip: Understanding the Different Move Command Options in Revit

In Revit’s move command options bar, you will find two main options: Constrain and Detach.

Constrain: This option restricts the movement of objects to either vertical or horizontal directions only.

Detach: Many users are unsure about this option and tend not to use it. Essentially, it allows you to separate two automatically connected objects when moving them together.

Let’s consider an example using walls:

Here, we have two walls that are automatically connected. When you use the move command without selecting the detach option, moving one wall will also change the length of the adjacent vertical wall. However, if you select the detach option, the two walls will move independently without affecting each other. This is the purpose of the detach tool, though in practice, it is not used very often.
