Practical Applications of Contours in Revit

BIM Software Tip: Using Contours in REVIT

In my experience with REVIT, built-in models are more commonly used because they are convenient for layout and easy to operate. You simply draw an outline, set a path, and create any shape you want—it’s that straightforward. There are many contour files included in the family templates, as shown in the image below:

Why are there so many family template files? Usually, we only need metric outlines.

The image above displays the outline of Family 2, which can be used directly in built-in models. The operation is quite intuitive, so I won’t elaborate further.

Within the curtain wall mullion outlines, Family 2’s outline is easy to find. But what if you don’t want to use Family 2 as the mullion outline? Suppose you want it as the outline for the eaves gutter instead, and you don’t want it to appear in the mullion outline options. How can you classify it accordingly?

To do this, open the editing interface of the contour family file and navigate to the Family Category and Parameters section. By selecting the specific contour purpose, you can classify the contour appropriately.

Now, let’s check the curtain wall outlines again to see if the Family 2 outline is still listed.
