BIM Software Tip: How to Use Revit Project Parameters and Shared Parameters
When collecting data from models, we often discover that the model lacks certain information we need. To address this, we can enhance the construction data by adding shared parameters within the project. This approach makes it easier to compile statistics from our team’s models—for example, by adding concrete grade information to beams and columns.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Start by opening your project. Then, navigate to the Manage tab and click on Shared Parameters. This will open the shared parameters editing dialog box.
2. Next, create a shared parameter file. Choose a directory for this file, then create a new group and define the parameter name (e.g., concrete grade). Confirm your choices to save the parameter.
3. After that, go back to the Manage tab and select Project Parameters. Click Add, choose Shared Parameters as the parameter type, then select the concrete grade parameter you just created and click OK.
4. In the Parameter Properties dialog, specify the categories where you want to apply this parameter. Since we want to add concrete grade to beams and columns, check Structural Framing and Structural Columns.
The resulting detailed statistics table will look like the example shown below:
