How to Attach Columns in Revit: A Step-by-Step Guide

BIM Software Tip: Revit Column Attachment

Columns do not automatically attach to roofs, floors, ceilings, or foundations. However, when selecting one or more columns, you can attach them to roofs, floors, ceilings, reference planes, structural frame components, independent foundations, foundation slabs, or other reference elevations.

To begin, select one or more columns in the drawing area.

Then, navigate to the Modify | Column tab and click on the Modify Column panel to access the attachment options (attached to top/bottom).

On the options bar, choose Top or Bottom as the Attachment Column value to specify which part of the column you want to attach.

Next, select one of the following attach styles:

  • Cutting column
  • Cut target
  • Do not cut

For alignment, choose one of these options:

  • Minimum Intersection
  • Intersection column centerline
  • Maximum Intersection

The target element (roof, floor, or ceiling) can either be cut by the column, cut the column, or neither can be cut. After attaching the column to the target, you can further adjust its properties, such as resetting the Top attachment alignment and setting the Offset from top attachment point instance parameter.

Use the Offset from attachments parameter to specify a value that offsets the column from the target.

Note: If both the column and the target are made of structural concrete, they will be cleaned instead of sheared. However, if the column is structural concrete and the target is non-structural concrete, a warning message will appear.

In the drawing area, select the target element to which the column should be attached (for example, a roof or floor slab). Keep in mind that inclined structural columns do not attach to the structural frame because they connect to structural elements rather than simply attaching to them.

When attaching the bottom of a structural column to an independent foundation, the column will attach to the top surface of the foundation at the intersection of their geometric shapes. For example, the column will extend correctly to match tiered or stepped footings. In the case of a support footing, the column extends as expected down to the bottom of the footing.
