BIM Software Tip: Revit Structure Family Type Naming Rules
In REVIT, organizing families through proper classification and naming is essential. This approach greatly facilitates later data processing tasks, such as detailed material quantity takeoffs, clash detection, and more.
Based on my personal experience in structural engineering, here is an effective naming convention:
Loadable Families (e.g., beams, columns):
Family Name: Section Shape_Material_Description
Example: rectangular concrete column (description is optional)
Family Type: Material_Section Size_Description
Example: JG concrete C30x400x400
Using material names allows for easier statistical analysis. The prefix “JG” denotes the structural discipline, which helps distinguish these elements from architectural components during model coordination.
System Families (e.g., walls, slabs):
Name Format: Part_Material_Thickness
Examples:
JG floors_C30 concrete_250
JG platform_C30 concrete_250
Stairs:
Name Format: Section Type_Step Type_Platform Type
Example:
JG integral pouring C30_260x165_100 platform
