BIM Software Tip: 5 Common Ways to Create Mass Families in Revit
Revit offers five automatic generation methods that don’t require you to select a specific shape type. Understanding these methods is crucial when drawing mass families.
Stretching: This method creates a surface based on, or derived from, a closed contour.
Rotation: Created from lines and 2D shapes drawn on the same work plane. The lines define the axis of rotation, around which a two-dimensional shape spins to form a three-dimensional object.
Layout: This involves creating a shape from a 2D contour placed along a defined path. The contour consists of lines drawn perpendicular to one or more lines that define the path. If the contour forms a closed loop, a multi-segmented path can be used. For open contours, the shape will not be scanned along a multi-segmented path. When the path consists of line segments, an open contour is used to create a sweep.
Layout Fusion: Created by placing two or more 2D contours along a specified path. These contours are drawn perpendicular to the lines that define the path.
Fusion: This method combines two or more contours located on different work planes into a single shape. Note that the contours can be either open or closed when generating fused geometric forms.
