On July 13th, Ma Yansong and MAD unveiled their latest work, Wild Bubble, at Japan’s Land Art Festival – Echigo Tsuchiya Art Triennial. This installation initiates a meaningful dialogue with the ancient rural landscape.

Wild Bubble is attached to a century-old house in Muromura Village. Its design mimics bubbles emerging from the old wooden structure, creating a temporary space that seamlessly connects with the traditional architecture. The new installation is lightweight, flexible, and semi-transparent, giving it a breathing, organic quality.

The interior of the bubble offers a softly expanding space suited for various events such as performances, ceremonies, and gatherings. Surrounding greenery and scattered colors reflect onto the white interior, creating a serene ambiance of gentle light. By blending virtual and real elements, as well as inside and outside, old and new, the installation breathes new life into the historic building.

Wild Bubbles emerge within this traditional village, yet they seem to have no clear origin. They are deliberately “de-symbolized” to evoke a fresh cultural vitality.
The historic house hosting the installation is the CHINAHOUSE Huayuan, which since its opening in 2016, has served as a creative hub for Chinese artists participating in the Yue Hou Fei You Da Di Art Festival. It also acts as a cultural bridge fostering artistic exchange between China and Japan.
