Designed as a peaceful escape from hectic workdays, this vacation cottage in Tomitsu was thoughtfully created to offer a sense of freedom and tranquility. Nestled along the coastline near Tokyo Bay, it features uninterrupted sea views. Situated on a gentle hill, the cottage offers clear vistas of Mount Fuji on sunny days, while lush mountains and dense greenery envelop the other side of the property. Understanding the natural allure of both sea and mountains, the design intentionally encourages the eye to wander freely in every direction.

Initially, the design team explored options like incorporating winding walls or carefully managing the indoor-outdoor connection by adjusting window sizes and placements. However, these approaches felt too restrictive and unnatural, confined by rigid boundaries.

To redefine the relationship between the building and its environment, the design focus shifted to the roof. The roof was divided into four sections, each extending downward toward the ground. On the side facing the front yard and parking area, the roof projects outward significantly, creating a spacious covered area beneath the eaves. The gap between the mountain-facing eaves and the second-floor floor is left open.

Beneath the roof, the design team created a unified, open interior space. The structural elements above — beams, rafters, and roof panels — are intentionally exposed, contrasting sharply with the traditional materials used for the lower floors and walls. This juxtaposition emphasizes the dynamic character of the roof. The architectural approach fosters a welcoming environment with openness extending in every direction, allowing occupants to experience the changing moods of the sea, the thick mountain vegetation, and the textured rock formations. The sounds of birds chirping and waves gently lapping add to the peaceful ambiance.

The owners visit this retreat almost every weekend, sometimes spending quiet moments gazing out at the sea in contemplation, other times enjoying lively music nights with friends. This vacation cottage continues to provide a fulfilling and relaxing space tailored to its users’ desires.
