The Zhejiang Million Project Yucun Exhibition Hall is situated in the heart of Yucun, Anji. It serves as a showcase for Zhejiang’s “Million Project” achievements and plays a crucial role in promoting the concept of ecological civilization.

Before renovation, the site consisted of two adjacent two-story factory buildings from the 1980s, totaling approximately 450 square meters. However, their interiors were not connected, resulting in small, inefficient spaces and poor circulation, which limited their ability to meet new exhibition requirements.

The design reconfigures the visitor flow within Yucun Scenic Area’s core, respecting the site’s natural texture and environment by avoiding the creation of new paths. Visitors enter the exhibition hall through existing public display spaces and corridors connected to the tourist center, establishing a seamless narrative flow between the tourist center and the Million Project Exhibition Hall. This spatial sequence collectively presents the overarching theme of the “Million Project” and forms a coherent narrative route throughout Yucun’s public core.

By integrating spatial narrative into the renovation, the transformation of these two factories reflects Yucun’s evolution alongside the “Million Project”. The design retains the original structure and walls, enveloping them with a larger, nested exterior shell. This new and old layering creates a pattern of “you in me, I in you,” with overlapping roof and wall skins that form a simple geometric transition. This approach revitalizes the previously plain facade and expands the interior space. A newly shaped window, framed by the bamboo forest of Jingshan Mountain, becomes a unique exhibit—the “Ecological Window”—highlighting Yucun’s ecological landscape.

The design preserves the spatial separation of the two buildings by adding a second-floor corridor, creating a vertical, three-dimensional exhibition route that incorporates circulation space into the display area. The original gray brick walls serve as exhibition backdrops, honoring the building’s history while reinforcing the exhibition’s continuous narrative. This design encourages visitors to emotionally engage with the space, exhibits, and nature throughout their experience.

The project innovatively applies local materials, using bamboo formwork concrete for the main walls—a traditional method that leaves textured imprints echoing the surrounding bamboo forest. This fusion of local nature and industrial heritage is further enhanced by a roof design that slopes inward, supported by steel components. Lightweight concrete panels create a hollow airflow layer on top, improving insulation while reducing structural load.
