The BMO Center in Calgary has officially opened at Stampede Park, becoming the largest conference center in Western Canada with an expanded space of 565,000 square feet. After decades of planning and four years of construction, this premier conference facility now spans over one million square feet in total. It not only establishes a new architectural landmark for Calgary but also expands the city’s capacity to host large-scale conferences and events that were previously unattainable.

Joel Cowley, CEO of Stampede Calgary, shared his enthusiasm: “For four years, we have been dedicated to providing a better gathering place for Calgary residents, South Alberta locals, and visitors alike through the expanded BMO Center. Today, we proudly open the doors of this facility at Stampede Park. This expansion was designed for Calgary and South Alberta, aiming to create a world-class venue that delivers an exceptional customer experience, both in design and through our signature Western hospitality. Interest from the conference and exhibition industries emerged even before our opening, affirming the positive economic impact this facility will have by supporting tourism and hospitality. We are built for the future and look forward to witnessing the success of this expansion for decades to come.”

The first landmark event following the expansion, the Global Energy Exhibition, is set to take place on June 11th. To date, over 500 additional conferences and events have been booked. This surge in activity promises to boost foot traffic throughout Calgary’s restaurants, shops, ride-hailing services, and various local attractions. The economic impact on Calgary is projected to reach approximately $100 million annually, creating thousands of new jobs.

Designed by leading architectural teams Stantec, Populous, and S2 Architecture, the BMO Center exemplifies a new generation of conference facilities. It offers a first-class customer experience, innovative architectural design, and serves as a vibrant hub for both conferences and the local community.

Kate Thompson, President and CEO of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), commented, “When we began designing this project with our partners in 2019, we asked ourselves how to create a facility that pushes the boundaries of conference center design and experience. Every decision since then has been guided by this vision. CMLC is proud to have delivered this project on time and within budget, fulfilling the world-class commitment we made with our partners. The completion of this catalytic project sets the tone for the future development of the cultural and entertainment district in the years ahead. We eagerly anticipate further growth as we continue to transform this area together.”

After more than 124 years of collaboration, Stampede Calgary and BMO have renewed their partnership through 2033. As part of this agreement, BMO has extended the naming rights to the expanded BMO Center, welcoming guests from the local community and around the globe.

BMO has been a long-standing supporter of the Calgary Stampede. In 1899, BMO became the official bank of the Calgary Exhibition, the predecessor to the Stampede, and has been an official sponsor since 1914. From awarding $5 bank account prizes for Best Dressed and Best Window Decoration during Stampede in 1923, to hosting square dancing and street entertainment events on Stephen Avenue in its early days, and organizing Stampede history exhibitions at BMO branches in 2018 and 2019, BMO’s support of the Calgary Stampede and community spirit has been unwavering.

Mike Bonner, Head of Personal and Commercial Banking Distribution at BMO Canada, stated: “Building strong community partnerships is central to BMO’s commitment to supporting business and life growth. As the naming sponsor of the BMO Center and the oldest commercial relationship partner in Western Canada since 1884, we are honored. This landmark facility will serve as a vibrant gathering place for the community and will have a significant economic impact. It further reflects BMO’s dedication to fostering a prosperous economy, sustainable future, and inclusive society in Calgary and beyond.”
