Tsuga Residence is perched on the rugged forest slopes of Brownsburg-Chatham in the Laurentian region. It transcends the challenges posed by this complex terrain to offer an immersive, sensory living experience. Designed for an architectural historian and his wife, a musician and singer, every space, material, and viewpoint has been thoughtfully curated to create a unique sanctuary that balances delicacy with profound respect for the land.

The homeowners, Chantal and Jacques, sought to leave their urban residences in Montreal to find a tranquil retreat immersed in nature. Their vision was to create a compact, contemporary-style residence that blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment, providing breathtaking views while ensuring privacy.

Jacques shared, “When we explored the work of Apparel Architects, we were drawn to their seamless integration of architecture with nature and their authentic use of materials.” Their design philosophy, which merges contemporary architectural forms with local elements deeply rooted in the landscape, resonated with us. It evokes a Nordic style reminiscent of Scandinavian residential architecture.
Embracing the natural landscape, the architects carefully addressed the site’s steep slope and natural basin through comprehensive planning. Inspired by the majestic pine trees and nearby lakes, the chosen site maximizes scenic views while strengthening the connection between the home and its environment.

Constructing Tsuga Residence presented a technical challenge. Builders skillfully anchored the structure on steep slopes, requiring meticulous planning and precise sequencing of construction phases. Innovative solutions ensured the building’s long-term stability and durability. Special care was taken with water and soil management to maintain structural integrity. Rainwater from the flat roof is directed into a dry well, and upon completion, the site was restored to its natural state. Local vegetation was replanted to stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, and preserve the original landscape contours.

The residence spans three floors, cleverly using vertical space to create overlapping volumes that generate dynamic visual interplay. The main floor is a long rectangular prism, topped by two staggered cube-like volumes, forming a bold yet balanced architectural composition. Overhanging boxes, wooden slat screens, and thoughtfully arranged openings emphasize the building’s vertical presence.

From the exterior, Tsuga Residence appears as a carefully orchestrated architectural symphony. The front façade, almost windowless, adds an air of mystery, while the rear opens up to stunning views of lakes and forests. This thoughtful layout reinforces the concept of ‘habitat.’ Each level creates its own unique connection with nature: the garden level allows visitors to feel the forest at the base of the trees; the main floor evokes the sensation of a suspended cabin; and the upper level immerses occupants entirely among the treetops.

On the main floor, expansive double-height windows frame views of trees and lakes, creating an intimate connection with nature. The changing light throughout the day transforms the living space into a constantly evolving scene. The garden level offers guest rooms and a sauna with perspectives that bring the forest within reach. The top floor features a private mezzanine serving as a peaceful retreat, opening onto a terrace with panoramic views. This level also houses the master bedroom suite, separated from the rest of the house to foster tranquility. The shifting perspectives enrich the sensory experience throughout the home. At night, the house glows softly like a lantern, with warm light filtering through wooden screens. This gentle illumination, combined with natural materials, fosters a serene atmosphere in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Custom Interior with a Unique Experience
The interior flows seamlessly from the surrounding natural environment and celebrates the owners’ passion for music. The living room evokes a contemplative ambiance, reminiscent of a concert hall. Warm wood textures and finely tuned acoustics create an ideal setting for the grand piano at its center. Red oak paneling extends from ceiling to upper walls, visually uniting and expanding the space, enhancing both its acoustic and aesthetic qualities. Anchored by a large double-height window, the living room is the bright heart of the home. Natural light highlights the wood and premium materials, resulting in a modern yet cozy atmosphere.

The choice of furniture and materials reflects a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. In the kitchen, the north and west walls are clad entirely in black oak, a bold decision that unifies the space while cleverly concealing storage. A central stainless steel island with a porcelain countertop and carefully selected design elements contribute to a simple, elegant atmosphere. Despite its compact size, the residence offers excellent flexibility: a bedroom on the main floor accommodates multi-generational living or future needs. A terrace with screened windows extends the outdoor living area, creating a peaceful, private retreat. The garden level houses a sauna that offers a meditative space with stunning lake views. A sculptural open staircase, featuring platforms that allow natural light to flood in, accentuates the home’s verticality. Its minimalist design, complemented by red oak doors, adds warmth throughout the residence.

Sustainable and Eco-Conscious Architecture
A core principle of this project was minimizing environmental impact while prioritizing high-quality, durable materials. The residence’s three compact floors maximize efficient use of space, aligning with social and ecological transformation goals.
The passive design strategy, including strategically placed windows for maximizing natural light, reduces dependence on heating and cooling systems. Exceptional thermal insulation ensures optimal energy efficiency, with airtightness tests surpassing Novoclimat standards, demonstrating the project’s high performance.

Wood, sourced locally, is the primary building material, reflecting environmental responsibility. The upper exterior volumes are clad in metal to enhance durability. Expansive glass surfaces embody biophilic design principles, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors and allowing the forest’s atmosphere to permeate the home’s core.

A Song of Natural Harmony in Architecture
Tsuga Residence exemplifies the power of integrating site, bespoke design, and precise construction, unlocking the full potential of a unique location. This serene home among the treetops is more than a dwelling; it is a tribute to architecture as an art form—a profound dialogue with nature that enhances and celebrates its beauty.
