The Hainan Science and Technology Museum, designed by MAD Architecture, is currently progressing steadily. The design phase began in 2020, construction officially started in November 2021, and the main structure was completed by June 2023.

Located in the Changxiu District on Haikou City’s west coast, the Science and Technology Museum serves as a provincial-level science hub and a key educational resource for the Hainan Free Trade Port. The site spans 40,000 square meters, with a total building area of 46,000 square meters, including nearly 28,000 square meters above ground.
MAD’s design concept invites visitors to explore the blend of urban imagination and nature by creating a space where ‘primitive rainforests meet future technology.’ This museum is not only dedicated to technology discovery but also offers an immersive natural experience.

The building’s structure is organized into 92 sheet trusses aligned with the floor grid and divided into two steel structure levels—the second and third floors. This approach enhances the integration of the main framework with the curtain wall and facilitates construction and future maintenance.

To realize the dynamic, flowing upward form of the building, the museum’s curtain wall uses FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic), known for its strong three-dimensional curved shaping capabilities. The exterior is composed of 843 uniquely shaped FRP panels. To withstand Hainan’s tropical climate, the panels are installed with open joints and feature horizontal and vertical edge water channels, ensuring effective waterproofing and drainage.

The museum comprises six floors—five above ground and one underground. A spiral ramp, reminiscent of the upward twisting of DNA, runs through the indoor exhibition spaces from bottom to top. Sunlight streams through the glass dome, illuminating every corner of the courtyard and ramp.

The indoor route guides visitors from the top down through a central core tube to the 360-degree observation platform on the top floor. From there, visitors descend the spiral ramp to explore various exhibition halls, all while enjoying views outside through the glass curtain wall.

At the heart of the museum lies a futuristic main exhibition hall, from which an undulating wind and rain corridor radiates outward. This corridor creates a new type of urban public space, connecting various functional spaces including a giant screen cinema and flying cinema to the north, and an astronomical observatory located at the southwest corner.

Natural educational spaces such as sunken plazas, wetland landscapes, and learning gardens are planted with a wide variety of local tropical plants native to Hainan. These areas provide citizens with places for rest, social interaction, and educational activities.

The Hainan Science and Technology Museum is expected to complete its curtain wall and landscaping by June this year, with plans to open for public use in 2025.
