The Jiading Archives serve as a scroll that reveals the rich historical and cultural heritage of Jiading. This project allows architects to narrate the stories behind Jiading’s cultural legacy by employing modern architectural language. Drawing inspiration from archive-like forms, the design captures the essence of “Jiading bamboo carving” and the tradition of “educating Jiading,” embedding these cultural elements into the building’s atmosphere.

The building’s facades are crafted using varied techniques to create distinct architectural interfaces, collectively forming a shape reminiscent of an archive book. Each side presents a unique character in response to its urban surroundings, whether facing roads or parks. The south and north facades feature large white GRC curtain walls that emphasize the structure’s cultural depth. Additionally, curved unit components mimic the texture of bamboo carvings, assembling a façade that resembles a lengthy scroll dedicated to Jiading’s bamboo carving heritage.

Facing the city park, the design opens up to create a more inviting architectural interface. The building resembles a slowly unfolding book, seamlessly connecting the park’s openness with the archives. Beneath the lifted curtain wall lies the main entrance, where the subtle glow of ancient bronze metal contrasts with the modern GRC curtain wall, symbolizing a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary materials.

The main entrance hall, called Tonggao, divides the building into two distinct zones: east and west. The east side houses the closed archive storage and technical facilities, while the west side accommodates an open exhibition hall, multifunctional spaces, and offices.

Within the grand hall, vertical white grilles evoke the ambiance of a library. Suspended corridors connect the archive spaces with public areas, fostering a dialogue that intertwines history with the present, tradition with modernity, and privacy with openness.

The four-story open garden terrace extends the park landscape from the west side. Sunlight filters through a “paper-like” screen, casting delicate, swaying tree shadows across the courtyard, creating a serene and inviting resting area.
